🗺️ Urban Traffic and School Capacity Analysis – Calgary
GIS Project | First Semester | ArcGIS Pro | Spatial Analysis
This project investigated the distribution of school capacity across Calgary’s residential communities, highlighting access disparities and traffic congestion affecting students. Using advanced GIS techniques, the project provided actionable insights to support equitable urban development and education planning.
🔍 Project Highlights:
Conducted a city-wide spatial analysis to assess public school accessibility for children aged 5–19 in Calgary.
Used geocoding, network analysis, and service area tools in ArcGIS Pro to map school zones and walkable distances.
Identified 91 communities lacking nearby schools, affecting approximately 44,588 elementary students.
Mapped travel zones beyond the 2.4 km walk-limit, flagging areas requiring infrastructure improvement or new schools.
Performed statistical and descriptive analyses to assess student population density versus school capacity.
Identified 10 major traffic congestion hotspots, offering insights for infrastructure and road planning upgrades.
Created thematic and interactive maps that visualized school distribution, traffic patterns, and service gaps.
Integrated socio-demographic data to support educational equity and urban resource reallocation.
Proposed data-driven strategies for expanding school capacity and redistributing students across zones.
Demonstrated the value of GIS in addressing real-world urban challenges through clear, accessible visuals and evidence-based recommendations.
